Also known as: Hawer, House, Sweet Wine, Hower, Musk Spice, Ohio Wine, Sharpe’s Spice, Sweet Wine, Uncle Sam’s Best, Wine, Wine of Cole
The true origin of this fine dessert apple is unclear, but one source says it was introduced into the west from the gardens of Judge Jonathan Buel of Albany, New York, in 1832. Although not well known in the northern states, it was a popular variety in the middle Atlantic states. Fruit is medium with clear yellow skin marbled with rich red and specks of brownish-red. The yellow flesh is tender and sweet with a pleasing vinous flavor. Ripens in September.
